If you happen to be an enthusiastic Ford F-150 owner, have a deep passion, or just want to learn more about it, continue reading below for a look at the vehicle's history and some fun facts. From the TT Model to the F-Series Picture a one-ton truck with no windows, a leather canopy covering the body with flaps for doors, and an extended trunk that looks like a wooden cargo box. This was one of the first Ford trucks, and would serve as the basis for all Ford trucks to come.

After Ford created the Model TT, customers had the option to purchase a factory-produced truck instead of buying a chassis and altering the body. For years this vehicle developed and, as the Ford Motor Company honed and chiseled away at the automobile, the first generation of the “F-series” was introduced in 1948. Dropping the single digits, the “F-Series” altered their models to the F-100, F-250, and F-350 in 1953.

Years later, sneaking through the cracks, the two-wheel drive F-150 was introduced as a new model in 1975 to avoid EPA required catalytic converters. It held a gross weight rating of 6,050 pounds - 50 pounds over the required weight limit. The F-150 was virtually a ghost compared to its prominence today, but it was still an improvement from the F-100, outselling it and debuting with power brakes, heavy rate springs, and a 300 cubic inch inline six engine.

The F-150's Reign Originally promoted as a slightly more heavy duty version of the F-100 and a slightly less version than the F-250, the F-150 would stay the same in its first couple years other than a few routine changes to the grille. In 1977, Ford introduced their square headlights and the upgraded F-150 Ranger Lariat. By the early ‘80s, the trim levels would change to XL, XLT, and XLT Lariat, and, in 1980, the four-wheel drive models included a coil-sprung front suspension, rather than leaf springs.

A few years later, in 1984, the F-150 replaced the F-100 and was promoted as the base model for the F-Series. Later, by the late ‘80s, Ford became the first company to feature antilock rear brakes as a standard feature on trucks. The F-150 received a fuel injected engine as the standard in 1988, and offered horsepower ranging from 150 to 230.  Many of the improvements revolved around the interior by the 1990s, as the truck was desired by more suburban families.

1997 included power everything, air conditioning, and a booming stereo. But not all the advancements were superfluous; the 4.2-liter V6 engine also had the ability to pump out 252 foot-pounds of torque and 202 horsepower. Three years later, the Harley-Davidson edition was born, featuring leather trim, an eye-catching exterior, and chrome wheels. Today, F-150s are known for their powerful Triton engines (available from a 302 hp V6 to a 411 hp V8), solid, full size, four-wheel drive P2 pickup platform, their ability to tow up to 15,000 pounds, and their comfortable, spacious cabin.

The F-150 comes with several variations - such as the XL, STX, XLT, FX2, FX4, SVT Raptor, Platinum, Lariat, and King Ranch - letting consumers choose their preference: luxury or rugged functionality. Constantly evolving to please customers, the Ford F-Series now offers “military grade” aluminum alloys, providing drivers with a truck more balanced between strength and speed while also making the vehicle more fuel-efficient.

Ford also offers the environmentally friendly Triton FFV engine which can run on up to 85% ethanol fuel. Tough Hard Facts The F-150 and the F-Series have been the best-selling vehicle in America for nearly three decades. The F-150 has won Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year award four times, more than any other truck. The 2015 F-150 actually debuted in 2013. Placing an aluminum body on the 2015 chassis, the car was test driven in the 2013 Baja 1000 off-road race.

The 2015 model also has more patents than any other Ford truck, raking in over one-hundred patents.
